Safe with a Drug Lord

Children in the Hole

Hola, everyone! I am back on Southern soil in Nashville after a great week in the Dominican.

Last week, I posted about some time I spent in The Hole — which is a trash dump in Santiago where squatters have taken residence over the last decade or so.

The story of The Hole is one that is grander than anyone could ever dream up.

Years ago, the city of Santiago set aside a large area (which is sunken in and dug out, thus creating “the hole”) to be a landfill. The river is filled with trash and raw sewage, and it is here that Santiago’s poorest call home.

And the mayor of The Hole? A drug lord. It’s his territory, and even in the midst of poverty you see proof of his reign. Nicely dressed young Dominican men with gold jewelry walk along the open sewer with expensive motorbikes, following prostitutes. Children who have no contact with the outside world flash gang signs and chant Dominican rap songs.

A man named Felix is the pastor of the church and feeding center in The Hole. He’s been around for seven years, getting to know the children and their families.

(Here is Felix praying with the kids before lunch one day).

One day, the drug lord requested a meeting with Felix. He saw what he was trying to accomplish in The Hole.

As long as you are here, the drug lord said, you will be safe. Anyone you bring to help will be safe. And if you have any problems, you tell me, and I will take care of it.

And it was true. As nervous as I should have been walking around with expensive video equipment in the lair of drugs and prostitution, I felt safe. We Americanos were welcome and loved.

That’s just like something God would do, isn’t it?

parting thoughts…

July 22nd, 2008 Posted in Dominican 08 Trip, Uncategorized | No Comments »

Well it is after midnight Tuesday morning. Scott and I are setting on the cabana one last time. The van will be here to get us in four and a half hours and we think we have nothing better to do than a post on the blog. With that said we would like for you to know what we are taking away from this week. Has it changed us and if so how.

Also don’t forget about the great opportunity to help pastors here in the Dominican with books for their study. Just follow this link and impact ministry.

Some people however serious the sitution can always find humor. You know the kind of people that tend to want to laugh at almost anything. Well here is our groups problem child. It’s her laugh that really keeps me going! Thanks for putting up with me for all these years. You would have to have a sense of humor.

After you listen to everyone share their story you can play them all at the same time for fun. That is what it sounded like many times during our week in the DR.

late night thoughts…

July 20th, 2008 Posted in Dominican 08 Trip, Uncategorized | No Comments » BY HAROLD MCKEE -- MORGANTOWN

It’s 12:00 AM Sunday morning in the DR and I am setting alone on the roof of our dorm. I have been thinking about all we have seen and experienced this week and was going through the pictures and videos that we have collected. We have seen so much but this one event really stuck in my mind and I am sure the mind of every other team member. It was a simple rain shower but it broke my heart. Have a blessed Sunday and appreciate all that God has given.

Construction Over, VBS Time

July 19th, 2008 Posted in Dominican 08 Trip | 3 Comments »

Today we’re going to a few churches to do VBS…we ended construction yesterday with a bang….THUNDER! Don’t worry…the lightening was far away, but it sure did rain. That didn’t slow us down though…all of us were out in the rain slinging buckets of cement to pour for the floor of a soundbooth on the second floor. It was hard work, but tons of fun.

Needless to say, we got super messy. :)

messy!

We have been having problems with not having water to shower/wash/flush…most of us survived on a sponge bath from a bucket after the above messy picture…we had water this morning but it’s off again.

Thanks for your prayers — everyone is healthy & safe minus a few sore muscles and blisters!

Will You Pray for Moise?

July 19th, 2008 Posted in Dominican 08 Trip, Uncategorized | No Comments »

I talked to Moise today and asked him how we could pray for him. He said, “Pete, there are three thing for you to pray for.”

1) Pray for the church. Pray that we will continue to reach this community and that many Haitians will come to know Christ.

2) Pray for my desire to know God and study His Word.

3) Pray for a good wife (notice he says a good wife and not just a wife) )

On a serious note, I know that Moise sometimes really battles with loneliness. Many of you know how lonely ministry can be, but imagine it as single man in a third world country.

So if you have a second go leave Moise a comment of encouragement or prayer and I’ll read them to him later this week.

The Illegal Post

Technically, I’m not supposed to be writing this….I’m supposed to be unplugged.

However, I just took a 3 hour test on-line and need some time before heading off to siesta. It’s about midnight here in the Dominican and everyone is in bed, as far as I know.

Upon arriving here, I was taken in by the lush, green mountains and vibrant landscape. Then a closer look revealed garbage lined streets and buildings that would never pass a building inspection in the U.S.

The past three days, we have been working at the church site that Cross Point bought a few years ago and has been a work in progress ever since. I’ve come to know a group of people, who’s mix of personalities blend together creating an interesting vibe, who are coming together to create something beautiful.

Something as simple as moving a pile of dirt can teach this hard heart a lesson. One person could move that dirt, bucket by bucket, up the steps, one by one, however when we called for a line something incredible happened. Person to person, hand to hand, we moved a pile of dirt. Relying on the person before us to get the bucket to us and depending on the person after us to take it off our hands. How many times in my life have I tried to move whole piles of dirt by myself thinking that I can do it on my own and I didn’t need anyone? When I admit that I can’t do it on my own and allow others around me to come aside me, so much more can be done.
Matthew 18:20 says “When two or three come together in my name, there I am with them.” What happened today when there was over 20 of us gathered together? I’m sure more than my small mind can comprehend.

You can follow the team at the Cross Point Mission website.

We Miss You Guys!

Today was our last day of construction. It rained on and off all day which complicated things but we still had a blast and worked hard. As you might imagine, everyone misses their friends and families. I thought it would be fun to record everyone giving a little love to people back home. Here you go….

Kentucky, First Dates, and Missions.

July 18th, 2008 Posted in Dominican 08 Trip, Uncategorized | No Comments »

Today I want to introduce you to some great friends of mine. If you’ve ever been on a CP mission trip to the D.R. then you’ve met them but if not….meet the Rogers. While in college Jeff was in a discipleship group I led. Brandi (my wife) was in a group with Vicki and so we set them up on a double date. The rest is just history.

They started dating.

They got married.
They felt the call to go into missions (I thought they were crazy)
They had twin daughters.

Jeff and Vicki are two of the most amazing people I know. Their faith stretches me every time I’m around. them. I still remember the first time they told me they wanted to move to the D.R. as missionaries. I thought, “You know they don’t speak English there don’t you? And they certainly don’t speak kentuckian!”

Following God’s bidding in their life, they have ruthlessly chased after God’s dream to change the spiritual climate of this island. Through bringing groups over, training pastors, and just loving the people they are doing just that! Changing an island for the Glory of God!

Check out their blog by clicking HERE (http://heartsinhispaniola.blogspot.com/) and if your interested it getting your youth group or church involved in missions you should DEFINITELY contact them! You can also support them directly from their blog if you’re interested!

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever felt God calling you to do?
